Alphart am Mühlbach: Crafting Tradition and Terroir into Each Glass

At Weingut Alphart am Mühlbach, we are dedicated to creating wines that embody the essence of Austria’s Thermenregion—where passion, tradition, and innovation come together. Our 10-hectare vineyard, located in Traiskirchen just 20 km south of Vienna, is rooted in showcasing the unique flavors and character of our native grape varieties, Rotgipfler and Zierfandler, grown on the rich limestone soils that define our terroir. Each vintage tells its own story of origin and purity, meticulously crafted by winemaker Lorenz Alphart to capture both finesse and authenticity. With each bottle, we strive to connect you to the land and traditions of our region, celebrating its heritage while embracing the future of Austrian wine.

Our Signature Varieties: Rotgipfler, Zierfandler & More

Our flagship varieties, Rotgipfler and Zierfandler, showcase the diversity of the Thermenregion like no other. The Mandelhöh Rotgipfler brings Burgundian elegance with delicate, salty minerality, while the Pressweingarten adds a bold twist with its tropical fruit and roasted spice notes. The Zierfandler from the Otzler vineyard offers complex herbal aromas and hints of fresh citrus. Each wine, whether a native varietal or classic Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, encapsulates the unique personality of our soils and climate.

Our Heurigen Restaurant – A Place of Connection and Hospitality

Open for nearly 150 days each year, our Heurigen Restaurant is where the Alphart spirit of warmth and authenticity comes alive, inviting guests to experience the full spectrum of our wines paired with traditional Austrian fare. Overseen by Cathi and Robert Alphart, our Heurigen is more than a dining space—it’s a welcoming retreat where friends of fine wine and food gather to enjoy genuine hospitality and unforgettable flavors. Each seasonal dish is carefully crafted to complement our wines, celebrating the unique qualities of our varietals, from the distinctive Rotgipfler to the elegant Pinot Noir. Whether in our cozy dining room or on the picturesque terrace surrounded by lush vineyards, a visit to our Heurigen promises a culinary journey that reflects the rich heritage and terroir of the Thermenregion.

Explore Our Vineyards

Nestled along the lower slopes of the Anninger mountain, our vineyards span the scenic villages of Traiskirchen, Gumpoldskirchen, and Pfaffstätten, at the heart of Austria’s Thermenregion. This historic wine region, once renowned as the “Gumpoldskirchner Weinbaugebiet,” is rooted in centuries-old traditions, with its unique limestone and fossil-rich soils dating back over 16 million years to the ancient Vienna Basin Sea. These soils form the essence of our wines, lending them a structure and minerality found only here.

With the establishment of DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus) status, the Thermenregion highlights its commitment to preserving native varieties like Rotgipfler and Zierfandler, reflecting the purity and regional character in each glass.

Our premier vineyards—Mandelhöh, Pressweingarten, Otzler, Pfarrweingarten, and Ruffenbrunn—each capture a different facet of this land. Mandelhöh, for example, delivers a signature saline minerality, while Otzler’s complex layers lend depth and finesse to our wines. In every vineyard, we honor the delicate balance of nature, allowing each wine to showcase the beauty and tradition of this exceptional region.

FACTBOX ROTGIPFLER

Rotgipfler is a crossing of Traminer and Roter Veltliner, and is related to Grüner Veltliner (hence its synonym Weißgipfler). Likewise with Zierfandler, Rotgipfler is a speciality found virtually only in the Thermenregion. Warm south-facing vineyard sites with good calcareous-based soils are necessary. With strict yield control, the wine shows a high extract content, pleasant acidity and a fine bouquet. It tends to age slowly and is often blended with the varietyZierfandler.
